NOTE: This post was written many months ago and never posted. Due to moving, a new job for one of us, and having an energetic toddler, we're a little behind. But we're back. More to come!!
One Year Old!
It hardly seems possible that in March, we reached Julia's first anniversary of coming into this world. It has been a few months since our last posting, which in like eons in terms of child development. As of the last post before this one, she wasn't yet walking and had recently begun crawling. She is now a champion walker and sometimes breaks into a run that is fun for her and terrifying for mom and dad. She has many bumps and bruises on a regular basis, including a huge goose-egg right in the middle of her forehead ON her actual birthday. We thought about getting her a helmet. As far as she has come, she still has a long way to go!
On a very sad note, one reason for being away from the blogosphere for awhile was because we lost my father a few days before Thanksgiving. I am so glad that my dad was able to meet Julia during the past year and that he could be there for her baptism last June. My mom pointed out that my niece Lydia was born the same year my sister Katrina passed away (2002), and 2010, which began with Julia's arrival in March, ended with my dad leaving us. When one soul leaves, as sad as we are, we're comforted that a new one has come along to join our family. With Katrina and Lydia having only a few weeks between their respective travels in and out of this world, it's almost like they passed one another en route, maybe waving hello to one another.
Needless to say, the holidays were difficult for my family, but we enjoyed our time together and recalled many fond memories of my father. As usual, Julia and her nieces and nephews injected a great deal of joy into the holiday season. Julia had a few adorable Christmas outfits: a little elf suit with a hood and a striped sleeper with a reindeer on the bum. Although she looked a little like an escaped Christmas convict, she was a sweetie.
Sleep?
So how is the little one sleeping? Julia has FINALLY turned the corner on sleeping. While she still has a bad night every now and then, she manages to sleep most of the night (between 8 pm and 5 am) the majority of the time. Throw getting sick or teething into the mix and all bets are off, but generally, she has been sleeping much better. Hallelujah!!!!
General Observation
When buying baby clothes, you must be psychic to know (a) how big your child will be in 4-6 months, and (b) what the weather will be like in 6 months. The sizing of baby clothes is all over the map. I had a slight frustration last year when I tried to buy a summer/sun hat for Julia in July, and all I could find at the kids clothing stores were WINTER outfits. In July. You would think I would have learned, but no. Now that Julia is walking, she has to be wearing shoes to keep her from slipping on our hardwood floors. As a result, I want to get her pants and footless outfits. I have a few one-piece footless rompers, but when I went to buy more in February, they were no where to be found. Shorts and tank tops, yes. Long-sleeved rompers, no. It is still SNOWING here (or at least it was this morning) and my down coat is still my coat of choice. I absolutely hate the fact that the Carter's/Children's Place/Gymboree folks are totally out of sync with what season we are actually in.
More later.
