Pictures! And what's up with maternity clothes?

In case you're wondering how and when we found out, we were in Traverse City for our annual anniversary/vacation the last weekend in June. Before heading up north, we celebrated my dad's 75th birthday in Muskegon. A number of weeks later, when looking at a picture from the party, my dad said, "Ah, the whole family." I said, "Well, actually it's not the whole family." He immediately perked up and said, "You're expecting? When?" He gets the prize for picking up on our "we're pregnant" message before anyone else.

And even though we're not finding out what it is, we've had two people say it's a girl because they dreamed it's a girl, two say it's a boy because I'm carrying it low, and we change our minds every day about what we think it is (although lately we've been thinking it's a girl).

We haven't picked out a nursery theme or furniture, and since we moved almost halfway through the pregnancy, we're still trying to figure out where we're going to have it! Because of swine flu, excuse me, 2009H1N1, we can't take tours of any maternity wards, so we're pretty close to pulling out a dartboard and just going with whichever hospital name we land on.

Otherwise, the little person has been kicking like crazy lately. All of the pregnancy books describe the first feelings as a "fluttering" but I can't say I ever felt that. I went from feeling nothing to feeling full-force movements. They're now pronounced enough that Tom can feel them.

I'm in full-fledged maternity clothes, which has been a little tricky at work. Suits are out for now, and most of my blazers are going to be out soon. I wish there were better work alternatives for pregnant ladies, but I'm making it work. The worst offenders are dumb maternity tops that have a tie in the back. Fine if it's as big as a shoelace, but I got a few tops with a thicker tie. I didn't think about it until I got in the car to drive somewhere and had this awful knot of fabric digging into my spine. Hello, designers! Pregnant ladies don't need tops that make them more uncomfortable!

I've also been on the quest for a maternity coat. Having the majority of my second and my whole third trimester in Minnesota has made me want to be prepared. Old Navy had a cute wool maternity coat so I went to check it out. It didn't have POCKETS!!! Again, designers, please, don't think that because you're pregnant, you don't have the need for pockets to carry things like KEYS. I guess this goes along with the knot-in-your-back tops. If you don't need to drive, you probably don't need to carry keys, so just get rid of those pesky pockets!

That's all for now!

The midpoint ultrasound.

Last week we had the big mid-point ultrasound. We didn't have the fancy 3-D imaging, so you have to use your imagination when looking at these.

In the first one, the baby looks more like Alfred Hitchcock in profile than it does either of us.

In the second shot, we see that we might have a thumb-sucker on our hands.

Everything checked out just fine and so far, so good. Ten fingers and some toes (we're hoping also ten), but we may have to wait until March to know for sure. We have decided not to find out the baby's gender, and we'll be delighted with whatever we get.

Coming soon: picture of Ann starting to look a little preggers!

Just getting started

Thanks for visiting! We'll be posting stories from our experience thus far and pictures of the pregnant lady very soon!
