Longing for Summer and Dog Toy or Baby Mobile?

Longing for Summer
Still winter here. Ok, it's January, so that's acceptable for now. If I'm still saying that in April, we will have BIG problems. Thankfully, it has been a bit milder with temps into the 30's last weekend! This morning's weather forecast included "freezing fog," which was a new one for me, but other than a biting wind, it hasn't been too bad the past few days. I remember when I lived in Ann Arbor having to explain to a co-worker who had recently moved to Michigan what "blowing snow" in the forecast was, so I guess it's only right that I should learn that in Minnesota, it gets so cold that the FOG freezes! So let's just take a little trip back a few months to when the temperatures were mild and the mosquitoes were out in full force. This brutal winter has made me pine for summer, our garden, our tomatoes and the flowers around town. Tom has the ability, inherited from his late and wonderfully green-thumbed Grandpa B., to grow amazing tomato plants. They don't even make cages that are tall enough and strong enough to hold those babies up. We should just invent our own line of heavy-duty tomato cages, since the standard ones from Home Depot and Lowe's just don't do the job. I'm sure there are more substantial cages out there somewhere, but we need something that can hold up a 6 foot plant with 30 pounds of fruit on it. Luckily, due to Tom's ambitious canning efforts near the end of the summer, we are still enjoying pasta sauce from our Roma tomatoes and "Tom's Terrific Salsa" made from jalapenos, tomatoes and bell peppers from our garden.

Dog Toy or Baby Mobile Character?
We got some more awesome shower gifts in the mail this past week, including the bedding set that was central to our nursery theme: woodland creatures. Thanks Liz and Kevin!!! We were originally looking for an owl theme, but this included an owl and a few other furry friends (including a turtle, which is not furry, but somehow fits into the woodland thing). Although Tom and I both dislike squirrels in real life (if you've ever kept bird feeders, you understand the constant battles with them!), they are also part of the theme. The other funny thing is that one of the other critters on the mobile is a hedgehog, and it is VERY similar in size and shape to our dog's favorite chew toy. We're afraid the mobile looks like a giant spinning dog toy to Murphy.

The Pack Arrives...
And the team rivalry wars continue. We went through a HUGE box of baby clothes Tom's sister Shellie sent (which totally ROCKS!!!) and found a Green Bay Packers baby hat among the many onesies and baby outfits. Tom was so excited, he tried to put it on. With the way the Wolverines have played lately, I probably should just start rooting for one of the other rodent teams in the places where we've lived (the Badgers, the Gophers, etc.). We are so fortunate to have family members and friends willing to pass on hand-me-down clothes and equipment, which is a huge help right now.

May you dream of warm summer days and fresh produce!
